Why it's easier than you think

Why Spanish comes quickly to English speakers

Spanish is regularly rated one of the fastest languages for English speakers to learn, and the reason is mechanical: the two languages share thousands of words, and Spanish spelling is almost perfectly phonetic. Once you notice that English endings map onto Spanish in regular patterns — -tion becomes -ción (information → información), -ty becomes -dad (university → universidad), -ous becomes -oso (famous → famoso) — you can recognise, and often correctly guess, hundreds of words on sight. Five clean vowel sounds and consistent stress mean that, unlike English, what you read is very close to what you say. Navoq leans on this head start: your first lessons use words you already half-know, so your energy goes into speaking rather than decoding.

Patterns that unlock hundreds of words

English and Spanish line up so regularly that whole families of words come almost free: nación, situación, información (-tion → -ción), universidad, ciudad, libertad (-ty → -dad), and look-alikes like doctor, hospital, animal, hotel, importante and natural. Spotting the pattern turns guessing into reading.

Spanish false friends to know

A few words look English but mean something else: embarazada is pregnant, not embarrassed; éxito is success, not exit; ropa is clothes, not rope; librería is a bookshop, not a library; actualmente means currently, not actually; and constipado means having a cold. Sound & variety

Castilian vs Latin American Spanish — does it matter?

Spanish is remarkably consistent across countries, so what you learn travels well. The main differences: in Spain, vosotros is used for “you all” and c/z before e/i is pronounced like “th”; Latin America uses ustedes and an s sound. Vocabulary varies a little (coche vs carro for car, ordenador vs computadora), and parts of Latin America use vos. The everyday phrases below are understood everywhere.
