Why it's easier than you think

Why Portuguese is more familiar than it looks

Portuguese surprises people: on the page it shares an enormous amount of vocabulary with English, because both lean heavily on Latin. English -tion becomes -ção (information → informação, nation → nação), -ty becomes -dade (city → cidade, university → universidade), and -ment becomes -mento — so you can read and follow a great deal before you've studied any grammar. What makes Portuguese distinctive is its sound: rich, nasal vowels (the ão in não and pão) and a rhythm that differs between Brazil and Portugal. Vocabulary you can read on day one

Portuguese false friends to know

Sound & variety

European vs Brazilian Portuguese — which should you learn?

Both are Portuguese, but they sound and feel different. European Portuguese (Portugal) reduces unstressed vowels and can sound clipped; Brazilian Portuguese is more open and melodic.
