Why it's easier than you think

Why Italian is so easy to read aloud

Italian sits closest to Latin, the root of so much English vocabulary, and it's often called the most beginner-friendly Romance language to pronounce. The reason is that Italian is written almost exactly as it sounds: every letter is pronounced, the vowels are pure and open, and stress falls predictably. Pair that with a familiar word stock — English -tion becomes -zione (information → informazione), -ty becomes -tà (city → città, university → università), and -ous becomes -oso (famous → famoso) — and a complete beginner can read an Italian sentence out loud, correctly, within minutes. Navoq builds on that: because you can already say the words, lessons move quickly from recognising them to using them in real conversation.

Read it exactly as it's written

Italian endings map onto English cleanly: nazione, stazione, informazione (-tion → -zione), città, università, libertà (-ty → -tà), plus near-twins like importante, animale, naturale, dottore, ospedale and musica. Sound out the letters and you're already pronouncing them right.

Italian false friends to know

Some words look English but aren't: caldo means hot, not cold; morbido means soft, not morbid; parente is a relative, not a parent; camera is a room; fattoria is a farm, not a factory; libreria is a bookshop; and estate means summer. Navoq teaches these in context so the right meaning sticks.

Sound & variety

The good news about Italian pronunciation

Italian is friendlier than it looks: it’s largely phonetic, so once you know the sounds, you can read almost anything aloud. Two things to watch — double consonants change meaning (pena “pain” vs penna “pen”), so hold them slightly longer; and word stress matters. There are regional accents from north to south, plus the polite Lei versus the informal tu, but the everyday phrases below work everywhere.
