Colours are everyday words — for shopping, describing and pointing things out. The Italian list is easy and very phonetic, so you'll say them correctly straight away. The one thing to learn is that most colours change to agree with the noun.

The everyday colors

The one rule: colours agree

Colours come after the noun and usually change to match it:

  • Colours ending in -o have four forms: un libro rosso, una mela rossa, libri rossi, mele rosse.
  • Colours ending in -e (verde, marrone, arancione) change only for plural: case verdi.
  • Three never change at all — blu, rosa and viola stay the same: scarpe blu, fiori viola.

  • Il mio colore preferito è il blu. — My favourite colour is blue.
  • Di che colore è? — What colour is it?
