Italian pronunciation made easy

Here's the best news in language learning: Italian is written almost exactly as it sounds. There are no silent letters to memorise and very few exceptions. Learn a small set of consistent rules and you can read a menu, a sign or a sentence aloud — correctly — within minutes. This is why Italian is often called the easiest Romance language to pronounce.

The vowels are pure and constant

Five vowels, always the same clear sound: a ("ah"), e ("eh"), i ("ee"), o ("oh"), u ("oo"). Pronounce every vowel fully — Italian doesn't swallow or reduce them the way English does, which is part of what gives the language its musical, open sound.

Hard and soft C and G

The only real "rule" you must learn, and it's completely regular:

• C and G before a, o, u are hard: casa (k), gondola (g).
• C and G before e, i are soft: ciao ("chow"), gelato ("jeh-lato").
• An h keeps them hard before e/i: spaghetti ("g"), chianti ("k").
• sc before e/i becomes "sh": pesce ("PESH-eh"), sciare.

GN and GL

• gn = the "ny" in "canyon": gnocchi, lasagne, bagno.
• gl (before i) = the "lli" in "million": famiglia, figlio, biglietto.

Double consonants matter

A doubled consonant is held noticeably longer, and it can change the word: pala (shovel) vs palla (ball), sono (I am) vs sonno (sleep). Lean on the consonant and pause a beat — pizza, caffè, spaghetti all have it.

Stress and the R

Most Italian words are stressed on the second-to-last syllable (aMIco, graZIE); when the stress is on the final vowel, it's marked with an accent (città, caffè). The Italian r is a tapped or rolled sound, just like Spanish — a flick of the tongue behind the top teeth.
