Weather in Spanish

The weather is the world's easiest small talk, and in Spanish it's a tidy little system. Learn the nouns, then the three verbs that describe them.

Weather words

EnglishSpanish
sunel sol
rainla lluvia
snowla nieve
windel viento
cloudla nube
heatel calor
coldel frío
stormla tormenta

How to describe the weather

Ask with ¿Qué tiempo hace? (What's the weather like?). Most answers use hace (literally "it makes"):

SpanishEnglish
Hace solIt's sunny
Hace calorIt's hot
Hace fríoIt's cold
Hace vientoIt's windy
Está nubladoIt's cloudy
LlueveIt's raining
NievaIt's snowing

So heat and cold use hace, cloudiness uses está, and rain and snow have their own verbs (llover, nevar).
