Weather in Portuguese

The weather is the easiest small talk there is, and Portuguese mostly handles it with one verb: estar. Learn the nouns, then the patterns.

Weather words

EnglishPortuguese
suno sol
raina chuva
snowa neve
windo vento
clouda nuvem
heato calor
coldo frio
storma tempestade

How to describe the weather

Ask with Como está o tempo? (What's the weather like?). Most answers use está ("it is"):

PortugueseEnglish
Está solIt's sunny
Está calorIt's hot
Está frioIt's cold
Está ventoIt's windy
Está nubladoIt's cloudy
Está a chover (PT) / chovendo (BR)It's raining
Está a nevar (PT) / nevando (BR)It's snowing

The "-ing" idea shows the clearest Portugal/Brazil split: Portugal uses a + infinitive (está a chover), Brazil uses the -ndo form (está chovendo).
