Weather in Italian

The weather is the easiest small talk there is, and Italian keeps it simple with two little verbs: fare and esserci. Learn the nouns, then the patterns.

Weather words

EnglishItalian
sunil sole
rainla pioggia
snowla neve
windil vento
cloudla nuvola
heatil caldo
coldil freddo
stormil temporale

How to describe the weather

Ask with Che tempo fa? (What's the weather like?). Answers use fa ("it makes") or c'è ("there is"):

ItalianEnglish
C'è il soleIt's sunny
Fa caldoIt's hot
Fa freddoIt's cold
C'è ventoIt's windy
È nuvolosoIt's cloudy
PioveIt's raining
NevicaIt's snowing

So temperature uses fa, sun and wind use c'è, and rain and snow have their own verbs (piovere, nevicare).
