Months and seasons in Portuguese

Months and seasons are everyday essentials, and the Portuguese months are close enough to English that you already half-know them.

The twelve months

EnglishPortuguese
Januaryjaneiro
Februaryfevereiro
Marchmarço
Aprilabril
Maymaio
Junejunho
Julyjulho
Augustagosto
Septembersetembro
Octoberoutubro
Novembernovembro
Decemberdezembro

The four seasons

EnglishPortuguese
springa primavera
summero verão
autumn / fallo outono
wintero inverno

Two things to remember

  • No capital letters — months are lowercase: O meu aniversário é em maio.
  • Saying dates: use (no) dia + number + de + month: no dia 5 de maio, or simply 5 de maio.

Good pronunciation practice here: the nasal endings in março, junho, julho and especially verão (summer).

Make them stick by saying them
