Months and seasons in French

Months and seasons are everyday essentials — birthdays, bookings, plans. Most French months are nearly identical to English on the page; the work is in pronouncing them.

Two things to remember

  • No capital letters — months are lowercase: Mon anniversaire est en mai.
  • Saying dates: use le + number + month: le 5 mai (no "of"). The first of the month is special — le premier mai (the 1st of May).

Watch the pronunciation of août (August) — often just "oot" — and the seasons that start with a vowel take l': l'été, l'hiver.
