Family members in French

Family vocabulary is some of the first you'll reach for in conversation. The French words are straightforward, and a couple of them — grand-père, grand-mère — you can almost guess.

The core family

Note that la fille means both "daughter" and "girl", and la femme means both "wife" and "woman" — context makes it clear.

Wider family

Two handy plurals

French uses one word for both: les parents means "the parents", and les enfants means "the children". Les grands-parents = the grandparents.

Saying "my"

Use mon (masculine), ma (feminine) or mes (plural): mon père, ma mère, mes frères. One quirk — before a feminine word starting with a vowel you still use mon: mon amie.
