Clothes in French

Clothing words are what you need when shopping or describing someone — and they pair perfectly with your colours. Here are the essentials.

Note that "trousers" is singular in French — le pantalon — even though English treats it as plural.

The verb you need: "to wear"

The everyday verb is porter: Je porte une chemise bleue. (I'm wearing a blue shirt.) To put something on, use mettre: Je mets mon manteau. (I put on my coat.)

Shopping phrases: Je peux l'essayer ? (Can I try it on?), Quelle taille ? (What size?).
